Tour #6

Ohio’s last company owned town sits west of Rt. 33 at the SR 595 exit.   The town’s early connection to the Hocking Canal (1840’s-1890’s) is commemorated at the entrance with a small park with remnancts of Canal Lock 18 .  A circle drive through the town on Hocking Co. Rd. 25 returns the visitor to Rt. 33, a mile south.  Industrialist Peter Hayden started this town with an iron furnace in 1852, but soon turned to coal and clay products once the railroad he helped finance arrived.  Hayden utilized his company houses, store, depot and church as a showplace for the brick and other clay products manufactured here, namely brick, block, sewer pipe and decorative chimneys.  One company home is now a community museum.  Call ahead at 740-385-4605 to make an appointment to visit the museum and hear about the town from local volunteers
