Easily into the forest you go. If you are a hiker, an entrance to the North Country National Scenic Trail can be found at Tecumseh Lake in Shawnee. Park at the lake, cross the spillway bridge to the right and find a info kiosk at the far end of the lake that marks the entrance to the trail. Head to west toward Logan/Hocking Hills or east toward Murray City and Burr Oak Lake. This portion of the trail is part of the Buckeye Trail that loops the state. Once completed it will become the nation’s longest hiking trail beginning in upstate New York and ending in North Dakota. The trail is also easily accessed on SR13 at Tom Jenkins Dam in the Burr Oak Lake area. For more info call the Ohio-Pennsylvania office of the trail at 740-767-3348 or download trail maps at www.buckeyetrail.org.
If experiencing the area on horseback, the Stone Church Hollow Horseback Trail is nearby in the forest between Shawnee and New Straitsville. A trail head campground includes stables and feeding bins for horses. The horse trail is operated by the Wayne National Forest.
