Tour #12

Art and history come together in  Rendville, home to many African American firsts set here during the boom mining era as African Americans and European immigrants lived in what was an experimental community where Blacks held important leadership posts such as mayor, physician, postmaster and labor union leader, all with the blessing of progressive industrialist William P. Rend who operated mines here.    Most of the buildings are gone, however the town hall and the Baptist Church still stand.  The church is now The Rendville Art Works, open daily Monday through Saturday,  featuring primitive art.  It’s historic significance is marked by the spiritual awakening  of young miner Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. that led to his journey to become one of the nation’s most influential ministers and early Civil Rights champions during the Harlem Renaissance, and father of storied Congressman Adam Clayton Powell Jr.
