Environmental Tour

Our Environmental/Natural Heritage Theme packages feature the many assets of current day natural environment in one of the highest concentrations of national forest lands in the state of Ohio, including Burr Oak Lake, the Wayne National Forest Visitor’s Center and hiking trails, wildflower walks, wetlands, etc.  Experiences also include sites that tell the story of the impact of various factors on the local environment of the Monday Creek and Sunday Creek Watersheds of the Hocking Valley which covers the primary "Little Cities of Black Diamonds micro-region.  Sites include those that tell the story of the impact of glaciers, early people, European settlers, mineral extraction, environmental restoration efforts including the beginning of the Wayne National Forest and today's watershed clean up and reforestation efforts.  Also considered on the tour are strategies for low impact environmental tourism and outdoor recreation pursuits today and in the future.  Particular experiences include guided boat rides on Burr Oak Lake, visit to active oil drilling and mining sites, watershed clean up sites where the effects of acid mine drainage are being mitigated, Indian mounds, glacial remnants, Wildcat Hollow Hiking Trail, Buckeye Trail, Stone Church Hollow Horseback Trail, the Greendale Wetlands, the Shawnee Fire Tower and the still burning underground mine fires near New Straitsville.  Sub-theme collaboration opportunities include hiking, hunting and fishing packages, Native American History, Wildflower and birding packages, environmental restoration, and indigenous plants.  

Lodging and Hospitality
Little Cities Experiences has lodging arrangements available with two major lodging vendors: The Inn at Hocking College and Burr Oak Resort & Conference Center, as well as five bed and breakfasts in the area:  Hickory Hill, Wildwood Inn and Lama Farm, Fox Farm and FullBrook Lodge.  Several food caterers are available for lunches at off the beaten path sites as well as local small town diners and one gourmet restaurant, The Rhapsody, in Nelsonville.

Guides & Transportation 
Little Cities Experiences provides narrated guide services as part of its packages.  Interpretive hosts are available at many tour sites to welcome visitors.  The service has a fifteen passenger van for small group tours and will sub-contract larger or additional transport.  Step-on guides and site hosts are available to tours who wish to visit the area. 

Booking
A six week advance notice is necessary for groups wishing to arrange visits.
