The Details

Little Cities of Black Diamonds: Place-Based History
This event focuses on a nationally signficant story that is told from the perspective of place. The Little Cities of Black Diamonds is a geophysical and cultural microregion located in the hill country of southeastern Ohio, defined by the mineral rich Sunday and Monday Creek Watersheds of the Hocking River, and the mining towns that appeared “as if by magic” after the Civil War when the railroad reached abundant deposits of “black diamonds” needed to fuel the recovering nation. Today it is home to the Wayne National Forest and a series of remnant towns seeking to rebuild around their history, natural envrionment and cultural arts. Learn more by visiting www.littlecitiesofblackddiamonds.org.
