THistorical Society to hold Preservation Workshop July 24 Athens, OH—The Athens County Historical Society & Museum (ACHS&M) is offering an educational workshop for the public that focuses on how to care for and preserve family heirlooms. Presented by ACHS&M Curator/Education Coordinator Heather Reed, “Preserving Your Family Treasures: The Basics” will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2010 from 9:00am-11:30am. The fee is $70 for the workshop and includes a preservation starter kit, an introduction to preservation, how to preserve items on a budget, personal one-on-one assistance in preserving family treasures, and a breakfast of pastries, muffins and juice. Free parking is available. The starter kit includes one archival safe box, one set of curatorial gloves, 10 archival envelopes for photos and documents, 10 plastic protectors for documents, 30 feet of archive tissue for textile preservation and one preservation supply catalogue. Participants should bring to the workshop a variety of heirlooms that would fit into a banker’s box. Encapsulation, a method of protecting documents in a sealed environment, will be offered for oversized documents, photos, and family tree diagrams. Cost is $5 per item. Additional museum discounted preservation supplies will be available for purchase at the workshop. Reservations and payment are required and will be accepted until July 20th. Admission is free for members, and school groups, $4 for adults, $2 for seniors and students, and $1.00 for children 12 and under. Admission is free on the 3rd Saturday of each month.
